The Secret of Anzio Bay
Published in Paperback by Word Association Publishers (13 May, 2002)
Author: Michael Mauritz
Average review score:

Great heart warming story
I totally agree with T West. This is a wonderful story. Lt. Michael Mauritz is truely a member of The Greatest Generation. My wife and I were privileged to see "Skipper", his ditched P-40 aircraft at a museum (La Piana delle Orme) in Italy in February.

A great read!!!
What a story to first crash your plane in the sea, swimming to shore, captured by enemy soldiers, only to escape,to lead to a five month journey across the snow ridden Apennines!! To read Lt. Mauritz story of deception and bravery has just left me awestruck. From the help of Italian civilians with food and shelter,to have a German patrol pass right by you and leave you alone, crossing the mountains in a fierce blizzard just thinking that your gonna die only to look up to see a small light coming from a candle in a house. Edge of your seat thrill ride from page one.

But it does not end. Mauritz returns to Italy 1998 to see the plane pulled from the sea. Hero type celebrations hence forth and as the book says Mauritz is an "ambassodor of peace". I will not give away his unexpected message. This is a real war hero not hollywood. This is a must read book.

The Secret of Mirror Bay
This book is very suspenseful. It makes you want to keep reading, also there is a good plot, and it is well written. If you like this book read other "Nancy Drew" books, written by Carolyn Keene. I really liked this book, actually, I loved reading it.

Nancy goes to look into 1 thing and finds another.
This book is wonderful. It has two mysteries in one. It's one of the best I've read. It has a great plot, and it neatly draws it together at the end. It kept me in suspense and it was difficult to put away. And if you enjoy this one, I suggest you read Clue in the Diary ,too.

South Bay Trails: Outdoor Adventures in & Around Santa Clara Valley: From the Diablo Range to the Pacific Ocean
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (November, 2001)
Authors: Jean Rusmore, Frances Spangle, and Betsy Crowder
Average review score:

Almost as fun as the hikes themselves!
This is a wonderful book that goes into great deatil about the many trails in and around the South Bay. It breaks down the area by specific parks and then suggested hikes, including mileage, elevation loss or gain, and time. It even has a neat little appendix outlining hikes by category (ie., short hikes, hikes to see spring flowers, etc.) The text is detailed, explaining what you will find around every bend, and the historical information on the parks is very interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get out and away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.

A good book made better
I just replaced my battered copy of the first edition with the latest, third one, and it's a real winner! These authors' books are always educational, interesting and complete. And best of all they lead one into many fine hiking adventures around the bay. I've spent many a fine summer day following their instructions. It's about time they put out a new edition, because of all the new parks and trails they had to cover. Recommended!

The Southern Tradition at Bay: A History of Postbellum Thought
Published in Paperback by Regnery Publishing, Inc. (December, 1989)
Authors: Richard M. Weaver, George Core, and M.E. Bradford
Average review score:

A PRIMER FOR SCHOLARS OF THE SOUTH
THE SOUTHERN TRADITION AT BAY was Weaver's doctoral dissertation but did not see publication until after his early death in 1963. Not a few critics regard it as his best book, surpassing even his classic and influential IDEAS HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

Here Weaver surveys the literature of the South from the postbellum era and shows how a variety of writers, from soldiers, journalists, and lady diarists to poets, novelists, and scholars, regarded the traditions of civility, gentility, piety, natural order and individualistic self-sufficiency the South so valiantly defended in the War Between the States. Weaver, though he expresses a discernible point of view in this matter, does not let partisanship hamper his responsibilties as an honest scholar. If he sees some logical fissure in the thinking of one of his featured writers, he notes such unflinchingly. He also permits the voices of dissent from the prevailing orthodoxy in his study, most notably those of Walter Hines Page, George Washington Cable, and Henry Grady, among others, who would, to one extent or another, qualify as Southern liberals. Yet Weaver concludes that even these apostates found much to commend and preserve in the Southern tradition and thus did not denounce it totally.

This is a fascinating study, eminently and surprisingly readable, exhaustive but never exhausting, and well worth the time and attention of anyone truly and seriously interested in the "mind of the South."

One of the most important books I've ever read
Richard Weaver was one of the best philosopher/writers of this century. This book is far-reaching in scope and theme starting with his first section, The Heritage, which encompasses - The Feudal System, the Code of Chivalry, the Education of the Gentleman and the Older Religiousness - to describe how the world view of the old South came to be.

He illuminates the Southern literary renaissance better than any of the poor attempts I've read by others.

Using a vast amount of material, published and unpublished, he presents in a very well organized fashion the South's own portrait of itself, as accurately as it has ever been presented.

Author: Donald D. Sabatke

I'll be buying one for my Dad to use at his tailgate party!
I just wanted to say that I am a Green Bay Packer fan, just like everyone else in Wisconsin and I also am a tailgater at all the Packer games. It is about time someone took all the great recipes from the tailgaters and printed them in a book. The recipes are out of this world and looking at all the pictures of the tailgaters makes me wish for the season to start again. Every Packer fan in the world should have a copy of this great book.

Great variety of fun recipes!
Impressive array of recipes from real football fans. I tried a number of the recipes and they were great. The book is also fun to read and is a real treat for Packer Fans!

Terror on the Chesapeake: The War of 1812 on the Bay
Published in Paperback by White Mane Publishing Co. (July, 2001)
Author: Christopher T. George
Average review score:

Highly entertaining and informative read
The War of 1812 is often overlooked in school and popular culture. That is a shame because the author of this book shows that the story of the war, specifically the combat along the Chesapeake Bay, is just as exciting and engrossing as any other story in America's history. Mr. George describes with vigor the humuliating defeats the US experienced (Bladensburg) and the heady triumphs (Fort McHenry) plus everything in between. Aside from the battles, the reader will also come face to face with little known American heroes such as Joshua Barney (a man whose visage deserves to be on a postage stamp as any in US history) and equally as little known British villains such as Admiral Cockburn.

After reading "Terror on the Chesapeake" one will wonder why the heroes, villains, and battles of the War of 1812 haven't received more attention.

Excellent Military Analysis
Great details on the battles, leaders and units. Well supported with maps and drawings. C. George has not glazed over minor details that military historians want to read about. Recommend you read it with 'Dawn's Early Light" by W. Lord (excellent) and "Burning of Washington" by A. Pitch (OK, touchy-feely). Pitch is good at social and political events and not battle.

Thomas Guide 2000 Bay Area: County Coverage of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marine, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties: Digital Edition: 85th Year
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Brothers Map (November, 1999)
Author: Thomas Brothers Maps

Close to a GPS for so much less
Being new to the bay area need not be daunting anymore. With this book in hand, you can go anywhere you want. All you need is an address. And since the map is in separate A4 size pages, it is very easy to look at different sections at the same time. No need to fold and unfold, no need to be worried about its getting torn.

The maps also have a lookup based on the house numbers. It will be the best investment you will have made in a long long time.

Thomas Bros.--Invaluable tool for the terminally lost
If you live in the Bay Area, the Thomas Bros. map book "Metropolitan Bay Area" is the one volume to keep by your side. It covers just about every single town and street between San Jose and the North Bay. If you're among the terminally lost, this is the book to have...forget those map web sites!
